‘His visits give me the strength to stay alive’
Riders for Health’s lifesaving work in Lesotho has been featured on international news network, Al Jazeera. aug12-1.jpgMany people in Lesotho live in isolated villages in the mountains. This means that without reliable transport it is almost impossible for health workers to reach their patients. In a country where an estimated one-in-four people are living with HIV, this inability to reach people who need care has a huge impact on the health of the population.
In this news story, Al Jazeera correspondent, Haru Mutasa, visited Alphonse Monokoa, an AIDS counsellor, and saw how his bike was helping him to reach patients a long way from the nearest clinic. Manthabiseng Lenka, one of Alphonse’s patients, said that the weekly visits were very important, ‘It is not easy living with HIV. His visits give me the strength to stay alive’.

 Day of Stars raises $36,000
Riders for Health’s annual Day of Stars on the 26th of July raised an amazing $36,000. The event, which is held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California before the Red Bull US MotoGP, is hosted by grand prix legend and Riders co-founder, Randy Mamola. aug12-2.jpg
Since it began in 2006 this day-long event has brought together Riders supporters, MotoGP stars and motorcycle enthusiasts from across the USA to support our work in Africa. Highlights of the day included a pit-lane and paddock tour led by Randy, with the chance to meet the current crop of MotoGP stars. Randy de Puniet, Michele Pirro, and James Ellison all made appearances, while Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies took group photos with fans. The day concluded with a record number of fans attending an amazing live auction of MotoGP memorabilia. Several MotoGP riders came out to greet the crowd and to autograph unique memorabilia.
We would like to thank everyone at MotoGP and Mazda Raceway, the MotorGP riders past and present who attended, and all the volunteers who made the event a success. Support from motorcyclists in the USA and all over the world helps Riders for Health continue its lifesaving work by helping us get more health workers on the road in Africa. Each year motorcycling events across the world help us to provide access to health care to millions of people in Africa.

Your support helps us get more health workers on the road
Riders for Health have produced a series of reports which show the impact we have made in the past year. aug12-3.jpgThese reports are an opportunity to see the real difference reliable transport has made to the lives of many people living in Africa. In each of our country programmes we have put in place a monitoring and evaluation officer whose role is to gather information so that we are able to measure the impact of our work. We believe that it is important to reflect on our work not only to find new ways of improvement but also to share our impact with our supporters.
Thanks to our M&E team we know that with your support we have doubled the time outreach health workers spend in their communities. Our sample transport programme has cut the average turnaround times for test results in half. Outreach health workers can deliver nearly 3,500 extra health education meetings a month thanks to having available transport.
To find out more about how your support has transformed the lives of many people in Africa why not read our new impact reports?
