Dear friends of social business,

We want to give you an update about our work and latest happenings in the social business field. Please take your time to read the highlights of the past two months and don’t hesitate to contact us for any questions or ideas.

Prof. Yunus and GCL were promoting social business at RIO+20 in Brazil
  • Prof. Yunus and the GCL team attended RIO+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, to discuss the future we want with world leaders and decision makers.
  • A meeting of the UN Secretary-General’s MDG Advocacy Group took place where Prof. Yunus, in his role as MDG Advocate, emphasized the need to empower young people to achieve the MDGs through social business.
  • Prof. Yunus also attended the Sustainable Development Dialogues organized by the Brazilian Government and further meetings with representatives from Brazilian and international companies, NGOs and international organizations.
  • The team from nbs, a Brazilian creative agency, organized a trip for Prof. Yunus and the GCL team to Santa Marta, the first pacified favela in Rio de Janeiro.

Grameen Schneider Electric – a new social business joint venture
  • Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, and Grameen Shakti, a social business dedicated to provide access to energy in rural areas, announced the creation of the social business joint venture Grameen Schneider Electric.
  • Grameen Schneider Electric aims to provide access to electricity and develop associated services for disadvantaged people in Bangladesh.
  • The official signature for the creation of the company took place June 19, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the fringes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
  • Grameen Schneider Electric aims, by 2013, to equip nearly 200,000 households with home solar systems, based on the solutions already implemented by Schneider Electric in Senegal, Nigeria, India or Madagascar.
  • Subsequently, the company will build on Schneider Electric and Grameen Shakti teams to conceive innovative and adapted solutions for water pumping or renewable off-grid power generation.
  • In this initiative, Schneider Electric and Grameen Shakti is supported by the Schneider Electric Energy Access (SEEA) Fund, which aims to support the development of entrepreneurial initiatives around access to energy. SEEA is funded by Schneider Electric and its employees, as well as institutional investors.


Worldwide Social Business Day 2012 was celebrated all around the globe
  • On June 28 the 3rd Worldwide Social Business Day 2012 took place and people all around the globe celebrated the concept of social business as well as Prof. Yunus birthday.
  • Live streams and video messages from social business organizations were available online presenting their projects and answering questions about social business. Take a look at all contributions on http://wsbd2012.com.
  • An amazing number of over 36,000 people were engaged online! Further events took place in Bangladesh, Germany and France.
  • Thanks to everyone for their dedication in social business and for your contribution in celebrating Worldwide Social Business Day 2012! We created this nice video to capture some of the great messages we have received.

Happenings in the Social Business City Wiesbaden
  • Social Business Day 2012 was celebrated in Wiesbaden with a joyful get together at the social business coffee shop Perfect Day. Look at the amazing cake we had in Prof. Yunus’ honor!
  • Lord Mayor Dr. Müller of Wiesbaden sent his personal greetings to Prof. Yunus and keeps supporting the Social Business City. Take a look at his message here.
  • Further initiatives such as Lalaland, Social Business Women and many more e.g. two entrepreneurs, who are starting a co-working space in Wiesbaden came around to network and enjoy Social Business Day 2012!

Social Business Lab with Okan University in Turkey
  • The Muhammad Yunus International Centre for Microfinance and Social Business at Okan University has been officially launched already back in December 2011 as the first centre of its kind in Turkey.
  • On June 11 and 12, 2012 a two-day Social Business Lab took place to built the basis for the overall strategy of the Muhammad Yunus International Centre for Microfinance and Social Business at Okan University.
  • During the two day lab the latest knowledge about social business and selected best practice examples were shared with Okan University staff and students.
  • As a result, a three year action plan was developed in order to bring the Centre at the forefront of solving some of Turkey’s and the region’s most pressing social needs and hub in the region for international excellence and exchange in social business.

Social Business Lab with nbs in Brazil
  • On June 25th a Social Business Lab took place in Rio de Janeiro together with nbs, a Brazilian media and creative agency.
  • The lab brought together practitioners from a variety of backgrounds in order to explore the idea of social business, share perspectives and best practices, and develop concrete social business ideas for Brazil.
  • After identifying the most pressing social issues in Brazil, participants developed concrete social business ideas in the field of access to affordable healthcare services, access to education and waste management.

GCL and Prof. Yunus were in Japan for the Social Business Forum Asia201121212
  • The second Social Business Forum Asia took place at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan from July 20 to 22.
  • Next to a key note speech from Prof. Yunus, a panel discussion took place with top representatives from Japanese companies Yukiguni Maitake and Watami, the National University of Singapore, Grameen Capital India and Planet Finance. In addition, a separate discussion with Prof. Yunus and his daughter Monica Yunus addressed the topic of art and social business.
  • Participants from all over Japan, as well as from Singapore, Malaysia, India, Australia, and Germany came together for this unique forum. During various workshops, ten teams refined their social business ideas and presented them to the audience and Prof. Yunus.
  • Moreover, eight student teams from Japan were selected for the final round of the YY Social Business contest, with the winning team receiving a trip to the Global Social Business Summit in Vienna
  • The Japan trip continued in Tokyo from July 23 to 26 with several public events and happenings.
  • During this successful trip, a Social Business Fund for Japan and a joint venture with SK Dreams were announced. Take a look at the photos on our GCL Facebook page.

Apply for the Space of Entrepreneurs at the Global Social Business Summit 2012
  • The 4th Global Social Business Summit, the leading forum for social business worldwide bringing together experts from corporations, civil society, governments and academia is coming up in November 2012.
  • The summit provides a platform to establish connections with like-minded individuals through a range of opportunities for networking. The Space for Entrepreneurs is one such prominent exhibition area.
  • Entrepreneurs get an opportunity to present their ideas and products at exhibition stands, visited by participants of the summit during breaks, free-flow times and guided tours.
  • We encourage innovative social business projects, initiatives and start-ups, run by individual entrepreneurs that are currently looking for support in enhancing or financing their business models to apply to the Space for Entrepreneurs. Young Challengers Meeting 2012 – Applications are now open!
  • The Young Challengers Meeting 2012 will take place on the 7th November 2012, the day prior to the Global Social Business Summit, to network and discuss the concept of social business among young leaders.
  • The Young Challengers are also attending the GSBS and are asking questions to decision makers about the role of social business in their countries and societies.
  • They will challenge political leaders from around the world, get together with CEOs from global corporations and meet Prof. Muhammad Yunus personally to discuss their vision for the future.
