Hello TPS Supporter!

It’s been a busy week here at The People’s Supermarket with Fairtrade Fortnight in full swing. See the Latest News section for details of some of the amazing events we’ve had instore.

Starting today we are offering a 10% discount for all students – you just need to show your student ID! Please help us spread the word!

We are still in need of recipes for The People’s Cookbook. For details of how you can submit your recipe with the possibility of it being published click here.

For 1 more week we have Couscous (buy one get one free) and Pasta (79p or 2 for £1.35) on special offer – come and grab a bargain while you can! We also have Sharwoods curry sauces are on offer from £2.05 to £1.55 Balti, Korma & Tikka Massala varieties.

NHS staff get 10% off shopping

We are currently running a 10% DISCOUNT offer to NHS staff until 17 March – please tell your friends in the National Health Service, especially those who work in the hospitals surrounding us about it!

Fairtrade events

We’ve had some great events over the past few days including Fairtrade in Design on Monday 5th March with a talk on various design projects around the world from Digital Handmade, a project that turns digital designs of rugs into a hand-woven reality in communities in Nepal. For more info visit www.digitalhandmade.com and visit the in-store exhibition throughout Fairtrade Fortnight also, Kipepeo Designs, a not-for-profit enterprise, selling hand-crafted cards made by impoverished women in Kibera, the second largest informal settlement (or slum dwelling) in Africa. There’s also been tea leaf reading, wine tasting, film screenings and panel discussions. Thanks to all our members, volunteers, supporters, guests and organisers who have made this such a success.

Upcoming Events

Fairtrade Bake-off, TPS, Thurs 8th March (10am-12pm)
The challenge: To produce a cake of your choice using as may Fairtrade ingredients as possible. Our entrants will be competing for prizes which include a Fairtrade hamper that will be awarded to the three most delicious entries. The winners are to be announced at midday by our expert panel:

Pop-up Restaurant, TPS, Fri 9th March (8pm-12am)
For one night only, the shelves of The People’s Supermarket will be pushed aside and a pop-up restaurant will be created. A three-course feast, prepared by the chefs of The People’s Kitchen, will be served up using an impressive range of Fairtrade ingredients. Wine, beer and freshly-squeezed juices will also be served. This is a one-off chance to dine in the surreal but elegant setting of a supermarket. Tickets are £25 (or £20 for members of The People’s Supermarket) and must be booked in advance. Global Farmer’s Market, Queen Square, London WC1N, Sat 10th March (11am-2pm)
There’s a story behind every product, wherever in the world it comes from. This farmers’ market is a chance for shoppers to meet directly with producers from Ghana, Malawi, Palestine and beyond and reps from a diverse range of Fairtrade suppliers. For details of this event click here

The Price of Sugar, TPS, Sun 11th March (7-9pm)
Screening of a documentary which follows Spanish priest Christopher Hartley as he visits the sugar plantations of the Dominican Republic, where dispossessed Haitians have been brought over the border to toil under armed-guard. To view the trailer click here.

Entry to this screening is free but there is a suggested donation of £3. Entry operates on a first-come-first-served basis.

Recipe of the Month 

Walnut, stilton and broccoli quiche

  Ingredients:
For the pastry:

200g plain flour, sifted
100g butter at room temperature
a pinch of salt
a touch of ice cold water to bind

  For the filling:
Small head of broccoli, chopped into florets
150ml single cream
100g Stilton cheese, crumbled
100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated
1 tbsp butter
4 eggs
75g walnuts
Salt & pepper

  To make the pastry case:
Cut the butter into small pieces and add to the flour and salt. Rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add enough cold water just to bring the mixture together. This can vary from a couple of drops to a couple of tablespoons. Wrap the pastry in clingfilm and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Line a lightly greased 9-inch loose-bottomed flan tin with baking paper. Place the rolled out pastry in the pan and gently push the dough into all the edges to cover the tin. Lightly prick the pastry all over with a fork and cover with a piece of baking paper and a layer of baking beans (rice or dried beans work just as well). Put the flan tin into the fridge for around 30 minutes to rest.Remove the flan tin from the fridge and place in an oven preheated to 170 C. After around 10 minutes remove the baking paper and beans. Put the flan tin back in the oven until the pastry case is a light golden brown. Remove the case from the oven and allow to cool.

  For the filling:
Preheat the oven to 190 C.  Heat the butter in a frying pan and fry the broccoli until just tender. In a large bowl beat the eggs and add the cream, stilton, walnuts, broccoli, and salt and pepper. Mix well. Sprinkle the Cheddar over the base of the pastry case and pour over the egg and cream mixture. Bake for 35-40 minutes until set. Leave to cool for five minutes.

SUMA Handmade Soaps: We also have a new line of natural soaps in the body care aisle! SUMA Handmade Soaps are free from SLS/SLES and parabens and will be available in Soothing Aloe & Cucumber and Relaxing English Lavender

ECOVER Biodegradable Compost Bags: Member requests have brought Ecover Biodegradable Compost Bags to the shelves as well!  A full range of recycled/compostable household paper products and bin bags will arrive this week.

So many exciting, new products coming to the shelves – be sure to take a look when  you’re next in the store…and tell your friends, too!

New Supplier! 

URTEKRAM: The TPS Products team is excited to bring NEW Organic Shampoos and Conditioners to the store shelves this week!  Shampoo and Conditions from Urtekram, a Danish company, come in 250 ml bottles and will be available in Fair Trade Brown Sugar and Relaxing Lavender.  These products are certified organic, SLS/SLES and paraben-free, and are not tested on animals. .

The People’s Cookbook

We are still looking for recipes for The People’s Cookbook. We want to collect recipes that reflect The People’s Supermarket values of sharing, seasonality and reinvention. We want it to tell our story and illustrate the diversity of our members. Plastic bags – You’ve got them. We want them

You keep them in your cupboard ready to be re-used – good on you! But you forget to take them to the store to buy goods, whoops! Going to have to grab new ones this time. Whoops, and next time! Before you know you have a cupboard bursting with carrier bags at home. Now you need to throw some away. Sound familiar?
Those of you who have had the opportunity to shop at The People’s Supermarket will be aware of the bowl by the tills full of used plastic bags which our lovely customers and members bring in for future customers to use. We hope that by doing this we can reduce the amount that is put into land-fill.

We do buy in bio-degradable plastic bags but they’re expensive and still not great for the environment… So, if you have a stash of used plastic bags at home that are sitting there doing nothing – why not pop them into the shop? This way a full bowl of re-usable carrier bags is available right where you need them – and we won’t have to charge for a new one. Win/win situation!
