Social Ventures Australia

January/February 2012 eNewsletter
Quick Links:

Social Ventures Australia (SVA) invests in social change by helping increase the impact and build the sustainability of those in the social sector. Our investments are focused on high potential organisations that are fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.
Social finance in action
North Yarra Community Health (NYCH) North Yarra Community Health (NYCH) has been providing free or low cost community health and welfare services to disadvantaged sections of its local community for 142 years. NYCH has identified an opportunity to establish a private GP practice to generate profits to fund NYCH´s community healthcare and welfare work and is working with SVA’s Social Finance team to source start-up funding to set up the practice and cover its costs until it begins to generate profits.

Learn more about how SVA is putting social finance into action, with a finance structure that meets local community needs as well as provides investors with both a social purpose outcome and a financial return.

Something to sing about
Caroline Aebersold SVA is delighted to announce the entry of The Song Room into our venture portfolio. Headed by Caroline Aebersold (pictured), The Song Room is a non-profit organisation focused on ensuring all Australian children, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to participate in music and the arts to enhance their education, personal development and community involvement.

Already working with over 20,000 children every week, find out how SVA will be supporting The Song Room to provide free, tailored, long-term music and arts based programs to even more disadvantaged and high need communities.

Working it Out
GenerationOne SVA Consulting and the SVA Employment team recently completed a series of case studies on behalf of non-profit organisation GenerationOne, to begin to build a more detailed and practical knowledge base of what it takes to successfully transition long-term unemployed Indigenous Australians into sustainable, meaningful employment.

The case studies feature employers who are achieving demonstrable, positive outcomes and were prepared to be open and candid about their experience. Each offered inspiring stories and unique insights, but shared similar foundations that underpinned their success. Read the full story.

Nurturing growth of social enterprise in Queensland
SEED SVA is delighted to be continuing to partner with the Queensland Government in the support of social enterprises that are creating employment opportunities for people who are excluded from the labour market. Through Queensland Social Enterprise Partnership (QSEP), funded by the Queensland Government´s Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) and Department of Communities, SVA is able to continue our work with 15 inspiring social enterprises, as well as expand our support to another 10 organisations.

Read more about the program and just one of its many success stories, Sandgate Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED).

Taking the guess work out of grantmaking
Fiona Higgins In her role managing SVA´s Grantmaking and Evaluation Service for private ancillary fund (PAF) trustees, Fiona Higgins (pictured) meets many philanthropists who find it challenging to decide where best to direct their funds. Fiona understands these challenges and works with PAF holders to navigate the complexities of the non-profit and philanthropic sectors as they decide which organisations should benefit from their giving.

Fiona has identified 10 key indicators, the presence of which within an organisation tends to predispose it to success in achieving its objectives. And while these indicators provide a good evaluation framework, Fiona also cautions against blindly following a formula without due consideration of the individual circumstances.

Let´s talk about love…
Lighthouse Foundation Lighthouse Foundation provides homeless young people who come from backgrounds of long term neglect and abuse with a home, a sense of family and around the clock therapeutic care. Through their Lighthouse experience, the young people heal, learn again to relate to others and rebuild their lives.

SVA Consulting was recently engaged by Lighthouse Foundation to undertake a Social Return on Investment (SROI) assignment for their program. In this Heart of the Matter piece, SVA SROI Analyst Kateryna Andreyeva explains that meeting one of the program participants and hearing her harrowing story was an intense and moving experience.

SVA´s Executive Director Employment Kevin Robbie has relocated to Melbourne and has expanded his responsibilities to also include the management of SVA´s operations in Victoria.

» Find out more about Kevin

The inaugural SVA Education Dialogue showcased success stories from some of our most disadvantaged schools, highlighting how student achievement is being turned around in various ‘Bright Spot’ schools. A key output of the day was a document summarising the discussion, which will inform conversations regarding the SVA Education team´s priorities and future work.

» Read the full document here

As one of the Founding Members of GoodStart, the non-profit syndicate which in December 2009 successfully acquired 650 plus ABC Learning Centres, SVA is delighted with the decision to rebrand the organisation to Goodstart Early Learning.

» Read how this name better reflects the organisation´s commitment to the first five years and its move beyond childcare into early learning.

Duncan Peppercorn, Executive Director of SVA Consulting, and Kevin Robbie, Executive Director of Employment, will share their insights on how to measure and evaluate the success of Indigenous programs at the Indigenous Sustainability: Enterprise, Education & Environment Conference, to be held in Sydney in February.

» Hosted by 3 Pillars Network in partnership with the Australian Employment Covenant, Philanthropy Australia and Net Balance Foundation, the conference program is now available for download.

SVA recently hosted a dozen student leaders from Toronto High School, a school SVA´s Education Team has identified as a ´Bright Spot´ and whose Principal, Mark McConville, participated in SVA´s Education Dialogue.

» Read about the students’ experience of the ‘big smoke’.

Social Enterprise Network
Dear UnLtd Memberl

Today, we’ve launched the new, improved Guardian Social Enterprise Network. Be one of the first to take a look.

We’ve taken the best of the old UnLtdWorld platform – acquired from UnLtd in March 2011, (read the full article on the acquisition) and merged it with the Guardian’s own social enterprise network and we hope it will be the best online community for social enterprise and social entrepreneurs in the UK and beyond.

The new site has lots of new functions and features including:

  • a personal profile feature – where you can tell the world who you are and what you do
  • a tailored dashboard  –  view content and social enterprises relevant to your interests
  • a free company profile – get listed in the new online social enterprise directory, sponsored by O2, connect with both users and customers and find partners

Logging in

We have transferred your UnLtdWorld profile to the new site, so you don’t need to do anything to become a member and can use the new and improved site straight away.

Log in here  by using the email address you used to sign up for UnLtdWorld and your UnLtdWorld password.

If you can’t remember your password, you can simply reset on the log in page.

Once you’ve logged in, you can edit your profile, change your password, leave comments on articles, and take part in live Q&As.

What’s more, if you run a business, you can also register for a free company profile  which will be displayed in what we believe will be the biggest online social enterprise business directory. This profile will increase your visibility to customers, commissioners and potential collaborators – find out more.

We hope you enjoy using the new site. We want this new website to be as useful and easy to use as possible, so if you’ve got any comments or questions, or you’d just like to tell us about a new development in the world of social enterprise, please write to me at david.mills@guardian.co.uk – or tweet us at @guardiansocent.

Best wishes

David Mills
Editor, Guardian Social Enterprise Network

d.light would like to thank you, our newsletter subscribers, for continuing to support our mission to deliver clean, safe and cost-effective solar energy to the 2.6 billion people in the world who don’t have access to reliable grid electricity.
We feel especially honored that many of you took the time to advise us by completing the newsletter survey we sent in November. We have learned a great deal from your suggestions, which included calls for more stories about our customers, new partnerships and new hires. We will include those stories in subsequent newsletters.
In the meantime, we thought we’d start off our newsletter for 2012 with a wrap-up of 2011. To sum it up, 2011 was a year of growth and expansion across the company.

Read on for details!

Top Talent Leads to Year of Growth
d.light secured top talent from around the world, accelerating our efforts to transform the lives of 100 million people by 2020. In all, d.light added almost three dozen highly qualified professionals to our global team.
In addition to Chairman and CEO Donn Tice, last year d.light welcomed Roy Ricommini, Vice President of Product Development; Chester Chen, Vice President of Operations; David Small, Managing Director, Africa; and Tim Rump, Director of Marketing, Africa. d.light’s senior management team brought decades of experience in consumer goods at companies like Motorola, Apple Computer, Unilever, Philips, and Colgate Palmolive, which made 2011 one of the best years in our company’s history, achieving record sales.
d.light founders Ned Tozun and Sam Goldman remain at the company as President, and Chief Customer Officer, respectively.

New Products, New Distribution
To better serve our customers, d.light added a barrier-busting product in mid-2011 to its product line: the S1. The S1 is one of the world’s most affordable solar lanterns. The product combines d.light’s high quality with extreme affordability, making it an excellent value for off-grid families.
In addition to expanding our range of products to meet customer needs, d.light significantly expanded its distribution network in 2011, making it even easier for people living without access to reliable grid power to find clean, safe and cost-effective off-grid energy.

d.light’s Opens Africa Regional Headquarters
Child
In May 2011, d.light opened a new sales and marketing office in Nairobi, Kenya, to serve our customers and partners throughout the entire continent of Africa. Under the leadership of Managing Director David Small, the office has become an important frontline in d.light’s quest to bring clean, affordable and renewable lighting to Africa, where more than 70 percent of people don’t have access to reliable electricity.
In the next newsletter we’ll give you an update from our team in India.
d.light Featured in ‘A History of the World’ and ‘Top 30 Social Entrepreneurs’
Ranging from inclusion in A History of the World in a 100 Objects to a feature on the NPR’s Marketplace, 2011 marked another banner year for d.light in the media. One of the highlights was seeing d.light founders Sam Goldman and Ned Tozun on Forbes’ list of top 30 social entrepreneurs “who are changing the world.” Known as the “Impact 30,” the list was the first of its kind in the magazine’s 94-year history. Read the Impact 30 list. For more coverage, please see our news page.

d.light Wins Spark Award; Finalist for Zayed Future Energy Prize
In October, d.light won a prestigious Spark design award for our new product, the S1. Just last week, d.light was honored as a finalist in the 2012 Zayed Future Energy Prize, which was awarded at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. We are honored to have been on a list of amazing finalists, alongside winners Carbon Disclosure Project, Orb Energy, and Environmental Defense.

We are grateful that d.light continues to receive recognition for the work we are doing to provide clean, safe and cost-effective solar energy to the billions of people in the world who don’t have access to reliable electricity. For more information on our awards, please visit our website.

In 2012, look forward to hear from us much more often… and we’d like to hear from you! Please click on the buttons below to share this newsletter, or to stay in touch with us through Facebook and Twitter.

主題︰ Kingdom Entrepreneur – RCE January Newsletter

Happy New Year!

Many blessings on you and your family in this new year. God is doing an incredible work at RCE and has been reminding us that his mercies are indeed new every morning! We have already been overwhelmed by his faithfulness many times over and are excited to share that with you here. Stay in touch with us daily via Facebook and Twitter.

Call to Action: Become a Volunteer Consultant

The Regent Center for Entrepreneurship is launching a BRAND NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY. We are looking for 50 professionals to form our charter group of Volunteer Consultants!  These are men and women with business experience who are willing to spend one-two hours a week mentoring an African entrepreneur remotely. Your meaningful involvement could change the world. It takes just moments to get started today!
Graduates from the Rwanda Business Development Center are begging for mentors. John Crosby, an American statesman, said, “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” Don’t waste this opportunity! We will match you with a mentee who could benefit from your unique wisdom and life experience.
You can be a part of the Rwandan miracle. You can help give hope and fan the flames of change. Click here to apply to become a Volunteer Consultant.
Not the consultant type? That’s okay! Share this incredible opportunity with your friends and family by forwarding this newsletter or sending them to our
website
. Don’t forget to share it on social media!

Largest Cohort Yet Begins in Rwanda

Cohort 4 is our largest yet with 51 dynamite learners! What an incredible blessing to have an overflowing classroom.  The class meets in a board room used by others during the day, so the room has to be rearranged every day before class starts. We have to add 15 chairs just to accomodate all of our learners. Our Open House after just one week was standing room only!
The first few days’ discussions were amazing.  When Dr. Mulford asked the class what they believed the purpose of business was, virtually everyone gave some version of the economics textbook answer – an organization whose goal is to maximize profits.  He gave them his “Business from the Heart” presentation, which is a neutral version of business guided by Holy Spirit, and the discussion was incredible!  The next night many testified that their thinking had been totally changed.  Dr. Mulford said he had never seen that many people make a 180-degree change in their thinking in one day.  They are excited to continue to learn how to their faith in business to change the world.
We have some fantastic students in this cohort, including the former Vice-Mayor of Kigali. Momentum for the program is growing! Additionally, we have a number of bids in to offer training to some of the most prominent Rwandan companies. These opportunities came from the incredibly successful Leadership & Customer Care Seminar that we held in October. God’s plans for the Rwanda BDC in 2012 might be bigger than we imagined!

See for Yourself

Incredible new videos of RCE’s work in Rwanda are available online, thanks to our friends at the Winshape Foundation. In October, two Chick-Fil-A operators went to Rwanda to share their wisdom and experience with our entrepreneurs and to lead a 2-day seminar on Leadership and Customer Care. God was present! These videos are an absolute must-see!

Student Research Group Launches This Week

RCE is starting a new student-led research club called Kingdom Research Fellows. The club is will conduct research related to kingdom business and have a ton of fun while doing so. The Fellows will be publishing valuable research on the RCE website (and beyond) so keep your eyes peeled! The group already has over 15 Master’s and Doctoral level students. God is doing incredible work to advance the kingdom business movement, and now students have the opportunity to be involved!
Have an interesting topic, idea, or experience? Share it with the Fellows! They will be doing interviews, case studies, and other first-hand research on kingdom business.
RCE covets prayers for the following areas:
Volunteer Consultants: We know that God has an incredible plan for this new program, but there are a number of hurdles that need to be overcome. Pray that God would choose the right mentors and oversee the matching process.
Continued Travel Mercies: With increased opportunities in Rwanda and around the world comes increased travel. Brittany is headed to Colombia next month to teach a seminar on integrating faith and entrepreneurship. We have facilitators flying in to be trained to open new BDCs. Pray that God will be in all the moving pieces.
Students: Dr. Mulford is teaching a course at Regent this semester on International Holistic Development which culminates with a trip to Rwanda. Pray for the students as they are beginning to develop projects to accomplish in Rwanda.
Kingdom Business magazine is a quarterly resource for kingdom-minded Christ followers who want to discover how to better fulfill God’s plan for their lives through business. We serve business owners, entrepreneurs, corporate executives and self-employed professionals who are aware of their God-given positions of influence in the marketplace. Kingdom Business magazine presents timely, relevant and applicable business thought and encourages business leaders to engage their faith as a basis for business. The Bible is the business manual of choice for our readers and we endeavor to extract and translate its principles into the language of business. Kingdom Business magazine is published by Kingdom PointMedia Group and is hosted online in a virtual print format. Don’t miss the first edition – subscribe here!
Members of the BDC Bangalore team are receiving facilitator training for the next center in the Global BDC Network – BDC Bangalore. The RCE staff is so excited as God expands the influence of this movement. Ethical entrepreneurship training in a city with so much opportunity!

A BIBLICAL VISION FOR SOCIETY

JUBILEE CENTRE E-NEWS

January 2012

In this E-News:

Dear Houghton
2012 looks to be a year of major challenges for Britain, the EU and many other countries round the world.  As I take on the leadership of the Jubilee Centre I am keenly aware of the responsibility we have as Christians to think our way, love our way, and pray our way through these challenging times wisely and faithfully.  Our aim in the Jubilee Centre is to help you do these things through our biblical research and responses to current issues in society.  Please browse through the wide range of resources on our website, and don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help you further.

A new start in 2012

The chair of trustees, Sarah Snyder, announces the new team members joining Jubilee Centre, including Jonathan Tame (pictured left) who takes over as acting director, and Merry Kirk as training coordinator.  Michael Schluter also re-joins the team in a part-time capacity.  Read more…

New Cambridge Paper: Free sex: Who pays?

Guy Brandon argues that significant costs of ‘sexual freedom’ are imposed on society as a whole, rather than borne solely by the individuals most directly involved. This represents an enormous moral hazard and, as a result, unsustainable and unjust public expenditure. The paper explores ways to address this, the most compelling of which is the Bible’s emphasis on rootedness and group responsibility. Read and comment on the paper in the resources section of our website.

A Christian Response to Immigration

We have written a short and easy-to-read booklet, A Christian Response to Immigration, available to download for free from the website. This draws on and updates our earlier work on immigration, hoping to challenge some of the misconceptions we regularly see and hear repeated in the news. Read more…

Transforming Capitalism from Within

The report Transforming Capitalism from Within by Jonathan Rushworth and Michael Schluter (pictured) suggests that, rather than seeking solutions to systemic instability in the political sphere through regulatory or tax responses, we should seek changes in the structure and conduct of stakeholder relationships. Read more… at the website of our sister organisation Relationships Global.

Other news and comment

Cameron’s religion and the Archbishop’s politics
We pointed to the fact that politicians acknowledge the key role that the Christian faith plays as salt and light in our society. Even as society turns its back on those Christian values, secular commentators nevertheless criticise the church for not playing more of a role in challenging what everyone sees as a decline. The media’s false prophets
We drew a (perhaps) surprising comparison between the prophets in Old Testament times and the role of the media as it was unfolded by the Leveson Inquiry. Read more…
Affordable housing
Encouraging stability in families might also help address the country’s lack of affordable homes. Read more…
