Impact Quarterly

Greetings from IIX and Shujog!

Dear Houghton,

Like many of you I am spending a lot of time on the road lately.  However, some trips are worth the endless hours in the plane. I just returned from such a trip.  It was an incredible trip to Abu Dhabi for the World Economic Forum’s Summit on the Global Agenda Council (GAC).

It was exciting to witness at GAC the incredible interest around social innovation and  impact investing.  I was proud to talk about all that is happening in the space (and beyond) in Singapore.  After my meeting at WEF, I’m now even more convinced that Singapore can be the global leader in the social capital markets sector.

I may say this every quarter, but this truly has been the busiest and most productive period for IIX and Shujog yet.  In the course of the last 3 months, we have completed several impact assessments of Social Enterprises throughout the region, published two landmark reports with ADB on the impact investment space and its related market intermediaries, and we capped off the quarter by hosting a wonderful series of events for Dr. Judith Rodin, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, while she was in town.

All this work could not have been achieved without the continued dedication and passion of the IIX and Shujog team of staff, volunteers and supporters from around the world.  A big thank you to all of you!

I hope you enjoy our latest edition of IQ as we walk you through the impact investment space in Asia and beyond.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali, Selamat Hari Raya Haji and Eid Mubarak!

IMPACT INVESTING AND THE “EPIC TRIATHLON”
GLOBALIZATION, URBANIZATION, AND CLIMATE CHANGE

dr. rodin insead event
The 21st century world economy faces three main challenges, and the only real means to tackling them is innovation.  Dr. Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, hosted a panel discussion that underscored the importance of initiatives around impact investing: companies such as IIX provide platforms through which investing activity can occur, allowing social enterprises to benefit from capital markets.

What role can be played by impact investors and social enterprises in tackling these challenges?   Read More >>

TRADITIONAL CRAFTS HIT HIGH STREET
RANGSUTRA RESPECTS PRODUCER AND CONSUMER

Sumita GhoseTraditional crafts are rapidly dying out as modern factories supplant artisan workshops.  Rangsutra utilizes these artisan techniques to supply high-end fashion houses, preserving the techniques in the process as well as providing livelihoods for over 2,000 rural Indian homes.  “Artisans were traditionally producing very exclusive products for their own families,” says Rangsutra’s Founder, Sumita Ghose, – all that was needed was to make these high-end products available to the outside world.

BETTING ON BIOGAS
CHAIRMAN OF EXCELLENT RENEWABLE ENERGY, DEEPAK GADHIA, EXPLAINS WHY HE’S CONVINCED THAT BIOGAS TECHNOLOGY IS GOING TO BE KEY FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA

Deepak Gadhia

India has been mainly dependent on coal as a fuel for power generation.  However, climate change, depleting coal reserves, infrastructure constraints, and government policy favoring the renewable energy sector, are propelling a new generation of social enterprises to come up with alternative sources of energy to meet the country’s growing demands. Deepak Gadhia, Chairman of Excellent Renewable Energy, sees renewable energy as key for securing India’s energy survival and sustainability.  “Mankind has no other option but to embrace renewable energy.”

IIX AT THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
WEF Summit on Global Agenda 2011
The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council in Abu Dhabi saw 800 experts coming together to address the world’s most pressing social, economic and environmental issues.  High on the discussion list were issues around job creation and inclusive growth.  One of the key considerations at the summit was the role of social innovations in the context of the current global crisis.  One of the takeaways  was the role governments can play in shaping public policy to encourage this much needed social innovation.  Over two days, Council Members participated in an extensive program across a diverse range of strategically important policy areas that will shape the agenda for the WEF annual meeting in Davos next January.  IIX and Shujog Founder, Prof Shahnaz, was part of the Council on Social Innovation.  Stay tuned for more on WEF in the coming months.

Did you know….

… that social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in growth, resilience, confidence and innovation?

According to a new report from NPC “Are social enterprises more resilient in times of limited resources?” based on research among 153 social enterprises carried out in 2010:

  • Social enterprises are 20% more likely to survive than a typical UK business.
  • 66% of new social enterprises were still going five years after they started, compared with 47% of UK companies.
  • Social enterprises experienced 17% annual growth on average, compared with 6% for a small business.
And this, despite 70% of the organizations surveyed were working in the 20% most deprived local authorities of the UK!
These findings suggest that the organisations are not only achieving their social aims but also successfully engaging in commercial activity. Read more…

Another recent report from Social Enterprise UK “Fightback Britain” goes further to evidence that :

  • Social enterprises employ more people relative to turnover than mainstream small businesses.
  • Social enterprises are growing more than SMEs: 58% of social enterprises grew last year compared to 28% of SMEs.
  • Social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in business confidence, with 57% of social enterprises predicting growth in comparison to 41%10 of SMEs.
  • Social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in innovation, with 55% of social enterprises launching a new product or service last year, as opposed to 47% of SMEs11.

Defining social enterprise. Still with me?
Boring they may be, but definition debates just rumble on and on (including at the otherwise excellent ClearlySo conference – coverage below).
The debate came back into focus last week when Social Enterprise UK left the joint venture that ran the Social Enterprise Mark Company, leaving Rise as sole shareholder. The Mark Company has faced critics concerned at its stringent view of what it means to be a social enterprise. Did this split occur because of ideological reasons or something else?
Social Enterprise UK have since launched a consumer-focused awareness campaign, ‘Society Profits’. More on that below, as well as tips on recruiting graduates, news of the public’s appetite for impact investing and the return of the Future 100 competition.
Finally, the UK’s leading social investment conference Good Deals is just around the corner. If you haven’t already, it is really time to reserve your place, as tickets are flying.
We’re delighted to be supporting the Triodos photography competition Social Vision. There are less than four weeks to get your entries in to win £1,000, tickets to Voice 2012 and free advertising on SocialEnterpriselive.com. Find out more.

Building Social Business
Pioneering for Results

Dear YY-Friends,

be part of it and make it happen!
Please find attached the information about our Social Business City activity.
Wiesbaden celebrates “1 Year Social Business City” and we all want to congratulate.
To take care of our Social Business City we decided to prettify it. Have you heard about the street art “urban knitting”? It’s a crafty way to reclaim city space and make your town, city, village more personable and less drab.
We would like to knit for Wiesbaden. If you would like to get involved, please get your knitting needles and knit
something as well. On the 4th November 2011 we will have a big party in Wiesbaden to put up all pieces of knitting.
Please support us and send your pieces of knitting from all over the world.
Thank you very much!
Best
Hans

主題︰ Social Business Forum for Youths

Dear all

Grameen Creative Lab@NUS would like to invite you to the Social Business Forum for Youths on the 18 Oct evening.

What is it?
An opportunity especially for youths to discover and discuss the future of social entrepreneurship. Begins with a screening of “Bonsai People”, a documentary film that explores the work of Muhammad Yunus and his vision from microcredit to social business; Followed by panel discussions with eminent local Social Entrepreneurs.

The Film
Bonsai People: The Vision of Muhammad Yunus
What if you could harness the power of the free market to solve the problems of poverty, hunger, and inequality? To some, it sounds impossible. But Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is doing exactly that. Yunus did his part to fight poverty by micro-lending $27 to 42 women, an effort which has now grown to 8 million women and 8 billion dollars. But he didn’t stop there; whenever he sees a problem he starts a social business – showing the world that complex problems sometimes do have simple answers. It’s not about handouts; it’s about a hand up.
