Lefulesele’s story

BBC World Health Show episode 6Lefulesele Masokanye spends her life helping to make sure that HIV positive women in Lesotho do not pass HIV onto their children.
It was her own experiences that led Lefulesele to this role as a mentor mother. Lefulesele is HIV positive and while she was pregnant she failed to follow her treatment programme. When her daughter was born Lefulesele discovered she had passed HIV on to her child. Sadly, Lefulesele’s daughter died when she was just one month old.
Now, Lefulesele uses her experience to help educate other women and prevent them from experiencing the same tragedy. After being selected by the organisation mothers2mothers, Lefulesele received training in how to mentor other women and tell them about the treatment available to them. Lefulesele tells women that by following the treatment that is available free of charge, they can protect their children.
In 2009 Lefulesele was mobilised by Riders for Health. She can now use her motorcycle to reach pregnant women and new mothers, even if they live in remote villages. Lefulesele can now offer these women advice and education to help prevent them from passing HIV onto their children.
You can now watch Lefulesele’s emotional story by clicking here.
The four minute film was shown on The Health Show on BBC World News. Over the last six weeks The Health Show has been looking at different aspects of Riders for Health’s work in Lesotho. To catch up with the first six episodes of The Health Show, click here

Impact story of the month: FACES

Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES), is a family-orientated programme offering education, treatment and care to people affected by HIV/AIDS across 62 sites in western Kenya. In the past, health workers from FACES struggled to conduct their work over the long distances and harsh terrain.
Riders for Health Kenya ProgrammeAs part of Riders for Health’s work supporting community-based organisations (CBOs) FACES received nine motorcycles in 2009. We now manage and maintain these motorcycles so FACES’ team have the reliable transportation they need to do their jobs effectively in the difficult rural terrain.
Peter Mchebere is a community health worker at FACES. Before receiving his motorcycle, Peter was only able to spend one hour with his community each week and visit one village, just 4km away.
Now Peter can travel to villages up to 120km away. He can see twice the number of people and five times the number of villages per week. Peter holds anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment adherence classes, provides education on nutrition and offers counselling for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Peter told us about a specific time when his motorcycle made all the difference: ‘One of my clients had just been tested [HIV] positive. The man reached a point where he had given up and was not taking his ARVs. Due to the defaulter tracing we were able to realise that he had not come to the clinic for his appointments with the doctor. I had to go there using the motorcycle. His home is about 60 kilometres from here. I am sure if not for the motorcycle my client would have died.’
Working with CBOs is just one way Riders for Health is helping to strengthen health systems in Africa. In the Gambia and Lesotho, Riders works in partnership with ministries of health to manage health care vehicle fleets on a national scale. We have also introduced a system of Sample Transport, in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. Motorcycle couriers can transport patient samples to the laboratory for testing and return with results just a few days later. In total, Riders for Health works in seven countries and helps reach over 10 million people.
