Investor Spotlight: The Tony Elumelu Foundation, an African based, funded, founded, and focused foundation

Each month, an impact investor discusses with the GIIN their motivations, their impact investment strategy, and challenges they face in this growing industry.  This month, we spoke to Tony O. Elumelu, who led the United Bank for Africa (UBA) from a single-country financial institution to a pan-African and global banking operation with a presence in 18 African countries as well as New York, London, and Paris.

After retiring from UBA last year, Mr. Elumelu created The Tony Elumelu Foundation, whose Chief Executive Officer is former Rockefeller Foundation Associate Director Dr. Wiebe Boer. Dedicated to the promotion of excellence in business and entrepreneurship across Africa, The Tony Elumelu Foundation aims to set a new example for 21st century philanthropy in Africa by emphasizing impact investment as the preeminent tool by which it achieves its goals.

The Ford Foundation is an independent, nonprofit grant-making organization. For more than half a century it has worked with courageous people on the frontlines of social change worldwide, guided by its mission to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. The Ford Foundation began making program-related investments (PRIs) in 1968, and has invested more than $550 million in PRIs since then.   As the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, OPIC mobilizes private capital to help solve critical world challenges and in doing so, advances U.S. foreign policy and national security. Because OPIC works with the U.S. private sector, it helps businesses gain footholds in emerging markets by catalyzing revenues, jobs and growth opportunities both at home and abroad. OPIC achieves its mission by providing investors with financing, guarantees, political risk insurance, and support for private equity investment funds. Since its founding in 1971, OPIC has accomplished its development mission by supporting $200 billion worth of investment in nearly 4,000 projects in developing countries and emerging markets. OPIC operates on a self-sustaining basis and returns money to the Federal Government every year.

RSF Social Finance is a non-profit financial services organization dedicated to transforming the way the world works with money. IRIS Initiative Assembles Agriculture Performance Metrics Working Group

The GIIN’s Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) initiative has joined with the Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade (FAST) to develop social, environmental, and economic performance indicators for investments in sustainable trade finance with a focus on agriculture. The indicators will be developed by a wide range of stakeholders that include FAST lending members, IRIS stakeholders, and experts in sustainable agricultural production, trade financing, and performance measurement. After review by the IRIS governance body, the resulting set of metrics will be publicly released and incorporated into the IRIS standards later this year. They will also be included in the FAST Shared Impact Assessment Methodology and Toolbox following  internal review and approval. FAST members will be among the first practitioners to use the new performance indicators to report social and environmental impact.

IRIS is a standard language for tracking and reporting the social and environmental performance of organizations receiving impact investment capital. FAST is a member-driven international organization that works to ensure the continued growth of sustainable production and trade by increasing the number of sustainable small and medium enterprises in developing countries who successfully access quality finance.
