GSVC 2011 Global Finals and Ideas to Impact Conference

Join us for the GSVC Global Finals and Awards Dinner
on April 7 & 8!

Finalist teams Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, France, Indonesia, Korea, South Africa, Thailand, UK and the US will gather at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley on April 7 & 8 to compete for $45,000 in prizes. For a complete list of the GSVC Global Finalists, click here.

On Thursday, April 7, the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) Finalists will compete for the SIA Award, and on Friday, April 8, the Global Finalist teams will pitch their social ventures and engage in Q&A with a panel of expert judges. Both pitch sessions are free and open to the public, creating an invaluable opportunity for investors, entrepreneurs, students, and the broader social venture community to hear the latest innovations in the social venture space and meet the teams in person.

Later that evening, join us at the Global Finals Awards Dinner to celebrate the culmination of the 2011 competition and crown this year’s winning teams. Maura O’Neill, Chief Innovation Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development and Berkeley-Columbia MBA 04, will give the keynote address.  She is a four-time entrepreneur in the energy, education, and high-tech fields, and will share her thoughts on the critical role that social ventures play.

Investor Spotlight: The Tony Elumelu Foundation, an African based, funded, founded, and focused foundation

Each month, an impact investor discusses with the GIIN their motivations, their impact investment strategy, and challenges they face in this growing industry.  This month, we spoke to Tony O. Elumelu, who led the United Bank for Africa (UBA) from a single-country financial institution to a pan-African and global banking operation with a presence in 18 African countries as well as New York, London, and Paris.

After retiring from UBA last year, Mr. Elumelu created The Tony Elumelu Foundation, whose Chief Executive Officer is former Rockefeller Foundation Associate Director Dr. Wiebe Boer. Dedicated to the promotion of excellence in business and entrepreneurship across Africa, The Tony Elumelu Foundation aims to set a new example for 21st century philanthropy in Africa by emphasizing impact investment as the preeminent tool by which it achieves its goals.

The Ford Foundation is an independent, nonprofit grant-making organization. For more than half a century it has worked with courageous people on the frontlines of social change worldwide, guided by its mission to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. The Ford Foundation began making program-related investments (PRIs) in 1968, and has invested more than $550 million in PRIs since then. Today, the Ford Foundation’s PRIs complement  grant-making across its program initiatives and advance its mission. The Foundation currently manages a $280 million PRI allocation which is invested in the form of equity investments and long-term loans.

As the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, OPIC mobilizes private capital to help solve critical world challenges and in doing so, advances U.S. foreign policy and national security. Because OPIC works with the U.S. private sector, it helps businesses gain footholds in emerging markets by catalyzing revenues, jobs and growth opportunities both at home and abroad. OPIC achieves its mission by providing investors with financing, guarantees, political risk insurance, and support for private equity investment funds. Since its founding in 1971, OPIC has accomplished its development mission by supporting $200 billion worth of investment in nearly 4,000 projects in developing countries and emerging markets. OPIC operates on a self-sustaining basis and returns money to the Federal Government every year.

RSF Social Finance is a non-profit financial services organization dedicated to transforming the way the world works with money. RSF offers investing, lending, and giving services that generate positive social and environmental impact while fostering community and collaboration among participants. In partnership with investors and donors, RSF has made $230 million in loans and over $100 million in grants since 1984 to for-profit and non-profit social enterprises working in the areas of food & agriculture, education & the arts, and ecological stewardship.

IRIS Initiative Assembles Agriculture Performance Metrics Working Group

The GIIN’s Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) initiative has joined with the Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade (FAST) to develop social, environmental, and economic performance indicators for investments in sustainable trade finance with a focus on agriculture. The indicators will be developed by a wide range of stakeholders that include FAST lending members, IRIS stakeholders, and experts in sustainable agricultural production, trade financing, and performance measurement. After review by the IRIS governance body, the resulting set of metrics will be publicly released and incorporated into the IRIS standards later this year. They will also be included in the FAST Shared Impact Assessment Methodology and Toolbox following  internal review and approval. FAST members will be among the first practitioners to use the new performance indicators to report social and environmental impact.

IRIS is a standard language for tracking and reporting the social and environmental performance of organizations receiving impact investment capital. FAST is a member-driven international organization that works to ensure the continued growth of sustainable production and trade by increasing the number of sustainable small and medium enterprises in developing countries who successfully access quality finance.

How might we better connect food production and consumption?

Join us on our latest challenge for positive social impact!

We’re hyped to be launching a fresh OpenIDEO challenge: How might we better connect food production and consumption?

If you’re passionate about local food, sustainability, and improving community happiness – then come inspire us with your thoughts!

Working together with the Government of  Queensland, Australia, OpenIDEO is posing the question: “How might we better connect food production and consumption?” It’s a huge global issue but one that Queensland is keen to tackle.  Check out this inspiring message from Queensland’s Premier, Anna Bligh, as she explains why this challenge is so meaningful to her community and globally.

What’s even more exciting about this challenge is that the winning ideas will be announced in mid May at the IDEAS Festival 2011 in Brisbane, where teams of policy makers, industry, and community representatives will consider each idea as a potential solution in Queensland and beyond. That’s right  – the OpenIDEO community has a huge chance to make some awesome social impact here!

This challenge asks us to consider ways to improve and enhance the relationships and interactions between producers and consumers, rural and urban communities, growers and retailers, retailers and consumers. We’d love you to consider issues such as energy use, transportation, biodiversity, food security, nutrition, obesity, the health of rural economies and the strength of inter-generational and intercultural knowledge sharing.

We’re on a tight timeframe for the challenge, so get your inspiration caps on for this first phase and populate the site with cool examples of existing stuff that makes you think differently and will help light a spark in the community. Then, during Concepting, you’ll be able to wow us with your fresh ideas.

So get posting your images, sketches, diagrams or stories and let’s make a difference! And because we like doing it together – why not spread the good word?

Cheers,

The OpenIDEO Team
