The Social Enterprise Coalition and a consortium of partners including PwC, WIPRO and Tomorrow’s People Trust, have secured a place on the new Framework to deliver a Work Programme contract in the South West region and we are working with PwC and Skills Training UK to deliver in London and the South East.

The Social Enterprise Coalition wants the voices of the social enterprise and voluntary sectors to be heard in the design of welfare programmes, and for the sectors to have the opportunity to play a significant role in contract delivery. Government approves more Local Enterprise Partnerships

Three more Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) were approved on 13 December 2010 by Business Secretary, Vince Cable and Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles. The partnerships for New Anglia, covering Norfolk and Suffolk, the Black Country and Worcestershire now join the 24 approved partnerships that were announced in October at the launch of the Government’s Local Growth White Paper. LEPs aim to bring local business and civic leaders together, working to support their local economy.

The Social Enterprise Coalition has produced a brief guide to LEPs.

DCLG’s new barrier-busting site

The Department for Communities and Local Government has launched a new service designed to help volunteers, community groups and social enterprises overcome bureaucracy and get things done in their neighbourhood. If you need central government’s help to get rid of barriers, submit a request online.

Support micro-lending

Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk has set out three key measures by the Government to promote support for micro-lending to small business. He outlined reforms to the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme (EFG) to assist community development finance institutions (CDFIs). The Minister has announced that guidance will be issued to CDFIs to enable greater use of the support currently available, and invited CDFIs to bid to the Regional Growth Fund.

Mental Health First Aid England CIC

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is exactly what you might think – a first aid approach to mental health. MHFA England’s aim is to give everyone the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental health problems, encourage someone to seek the right help, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness.

MHFA England provides MHFA instructor training programmes, and approved instructors then go on to deliver MHFA courses. Usually taught over two days, the courses are evidence-based and have been developed and regulated by the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE). They cover the causes, symptoms and treatments of common mental health problems.

MHFA England became registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in September 2009 and is limited by guarantee. The organisation is also a Social Enterprise Mark holder.
