Investor Spotlight 2010: A Year of Conversations

For a full year now, the GIIN has had monthly conversations with impact investors to learn more about their motivations, their investment strategy, and how they have met challenges in this growing industry. We are proud of the resulting archive and the wealth of information that has been shared with the GIIN community by so many impact investing pioneers.

These Investor Spotlight conversations remind us that the once-niche impact investing market now appeals to many different types of investors, including wealth managers like Capricorn Investment Group and Wells Fargo Family Wealth, large-scale financial institutions like TIAA-CREF, institutional foundations like W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and Omidyar Network, and family foundations like the KL Felicitas Foundation.

With such broad interest from the buy-side of the market, it’s no surprise that innovative fund managers like Beartooth Capital, Aavishkaar, Triodos Investment Management, and Sarona Asset Management have built businesses by sourcing deals that provide both social and environmental benefits alongside financial returns.

We also spoke this year with two field-building impact investors, J.P. Morgan and The Rockefeller Foundation, about their jointly-authored research note which asserts that impact investments constitute an emerging asset class.

With such tremendous momentum, impact investing has an undoubtedly exciting future in 2011. We look forward to the next year of conversations with the leaders of our industry.
