Merry Christmas from the Business Support Team, and everyone at the Social Enterprise Coalition!

There have been some exciting developments since our newsletter earlier this month, so we’re sending you this brief update. Importantly, we want to make a clarification about our Leadership Development course coming in the New Year, and let you know what’s new and upcoming in 2011 from SEC.

Leadership Development course

Clarification: We apologise that the SEC Business Support Programme Newsletter Issue 4 erroneously named this Leadership project as “LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOR NHS RIGHT TO REQUESTERS”. All the text below was correct but the title should have in fact read –

‘LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – Social Enterprise Emerging and Senior Leaders project’. The course is in fact open to leaders from all types of social enterprises and areas of the social enterprise movement.

Recognising that leadership development plays a fundamental part in the future success of the social enterprise movement, a Social Enterprise Leadership Development project was included as part of the Big Lottery Funds Investing in Social Enterprise Expansion (I-SEE) programme. SEC through its management of the I-SEE programme believes this project can help support the social enterprise sector to develop, grow and be sustainable through a combination of leadership skills development, transfer of knowledge, peer support and networking.

Real Partners CIC

The course will be delivered by Real Partners CIC; a community interest company that helps third sector organisations improve performance through effective and focused leadership and organisation development.

The first part of the project is designed to enable the next generation of social enterprise leaders to make that ‘next step up’ in terms of their development and make a real social impact with their organisation. The later part of the project will focus on existing senior leaders and how they can consolidate and build the strategic leadership capability needed to be successful in an increasingly complex and challenging environment. The respective leadership courses will explore the essential requirements of leading an effective, innovative and successful social enterprise following four key themes:

–       Leading your social enterprise – motivating and leading a successful organisation;

–       Managing your social enterprise – building the capacity to manage a productive and profitable venture;

–       Marketing your social enterprise – engaging and influencing others and

–       Sustaining your social enterprise – creating a long term balance of people, income and planet.

The Leadership Development course will be delivered with an initial cohort of 20 emerging social enterprise leaders in March and April 2011, with a further group of 20 senior leaders in September 2011. ore details to follow in early January 2011. Voice11, the UK’s biggest social enterprise event, will take place on 29th and 30th March 2011 at the prestigious London venue, The O2.

Voice11 is the event for everyone in and around the growing social enterprise movement . If you’re interested in social enterprise you should be a part of it. Voice 11 is going to be a vibrant, energising place. It’s where you can learn, meet investors, train, buy, sell, innovate, understand how to start or grow your business, break into new markets, showcase, ask questions, give answers, and receive on-the-spot advice and information.

The programme is happening simultaneously across different zones throughout the day. Those looking for business support and inspiration can find tailored advice and specialist sessions in each zone: 

–       Grow your social enterprise zone will be geared towards helping the growth of social enterprises. The stands in this space will have key service providers (communications, marketing, banks, accounting, insurance, finance, HR) and already established social enterprises there to talk to and share experiences with similar organisations.

–       The Start your social enterprise zone will be mainly for those who are emerging or new social enterprises, and those who are considering moving into social enterprise.

–       The Move to social enterprise zone will focus on public and third sector organisations as well as existing businesses who are thinking of social enterprise as part of their future plans.
