Social Enterprise Day 2010 logo

Highlights from Social Enterprise Day 2010

Thursday 18 November was a day of celebration and profile-raising for social enterprises across the country as they opened their doors on Social Enterprise Day, as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

In locations including BirminghamSouthampton and Camden in London, social enterprises welcomed the public, politicians and business people in support of SEC’s ‘It’s time to meet you local social enterprise’ campaign.

A number of Government ministers made the most of the opportunity to get out and about on the day, including Nick Hurd MP who dropped in at Walmer Road School to visit a project being run by social enterprise P3.  Paul Burstow MP visited HCT and Lynne Featherstone MP wrote this blog post following her visit to the Selby Centre.

On the day SEC rallied more support for the Public Services (Social Enterprise and Social Value) bill which was debated in Parliament the following day, on 19 November.  Members of the social enterprise community gathered in a chilly Victoria Tower Gardens to pose for photographs with Chris White MP, who tabled the proposed legislation, before going into Parliament to lobby their MPs to support the bill.

The hard work by all in the movement to lend their weight behind this bill paid dividends because the next day, after four hours of debate, MPs voted in favour of the progression of the bill to committee stage.  If passed, public sector contracts will be required to deliver positive social, economic and environmental outcomes in communities.  SEC’s CEO Peter Holbrook posted a blog at the end of the week to celebrate the outcome – read his post here.

In the media SEC appeared on the front page of the Guardian, in the Sun, Daily Mail and Peter Holbrook was invited onto BBC Radio Five Live to talk about social enterprise.

For a round up of some of the other activity that took place across the UK on the day visit Social Enterprise Live.

Your views wanted!

Social enterprise collective purchasing

Are you involved in ‘collective purchasing’, for example with third sector organisations, to secure better deals for the disadvantaged or vulnerable people?  Do you work with other social enterprises to buy products or services together?  Is this something that you would consider doing? If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, please contact jon.woolfson@socialenterprise.org.uk to help us influence government opinion.

Social finance information

Have you been seeking information about financing your social enterprise?  What kind of information have you found and what else would you find useful?  Has a lack of comparative information hindered your search for social finance?  Your experiences could help us develop relevant solutions.  Please contact jon.woolfson@socialenterprise.org.uk.

Modernising commissioning Green Paper

The Government is preparing a modernising commissioning Green Paper which will feed into the reform White Paper in the new year.  SEC will be feeding into this.  The key areas the paper is looking at include: In which public service areas could Government create new opportunities for civil society organisations to deliver? How could Government make existing public service markets more accessible to civil society organisations?  How could commissioners use assessments of full social, environmental and economic value to inform their commissioning decisions? And how could civil society organisations support greater citizen and community involvement in all stages of the commissioning?  If you would like to feed in please contact ceri.jones@socialenterprise.org.uk

Speaker John Bercow cuts the ribbon (with a little help) to the House of Commons' first ever on site nursery which is being run by a social enterprise

Parliament’s first ever onsite nursery is a social enterprise

In a jam-packed ceremony this week, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Harriet Harman, Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson and Conservative MP Eleanor Laing joined the House of Commons Speaker John Bercow to officially open the doors to the first ever onsite nursery, forty years after the idea was first raised.

The nursery at No 1 Parliament Street, managed by leading childcare charity and social enterprise London Early Years Foundation (LEYF), will make childcare facilities available to members and their staff, staff of the House of Commons and PICT.

Speaker Bercow celebrated the landmark achievement:

“I am delighted that the first nursery for the House of Commons was completed and ready for occupation on budget and on time.  It is a delightful facility that will provide excellent childcare in comfortable, stimulating and secure surroundings.

LEYF CEO, June O’Sullivan, added:

“As an organisation very much born and bred in Westminster, we were naturally thrilled to have been awarded such a ground-breaking opportunity earlier this year.

“To now officially celebrate the opening of such a fantastic new space for children at the heart of British government, we are absolutely delighted.”

From the Director

Dr. John Mulford, Director, Regent Center for EntrepreneurshipIt has been a busy fall! Jason Benedict and I developed the curriculum for the entrepreneurship training course in Rwanda, and have traveled there six times in the past few months in order to launch the program. It has been exciting to teach the first cohort at the Business Development Center in Kigali, and we look forward to seeing the new businesses our students at the BDC will start in the coming months.

One important element of our training is having visiting executives join us at the BDC to work with students and interact with the local business community. A recognized investment authority, Andrew Root, Regent MBA ’94, is just one of many individuals who are pouring into the lives of our students.

On the home front, Tom Stansbury, Regent MBA ’99, is spearheading an exciting kingdom initiative in partnership with Nelson’s Catering and The Refuge.

Finally, don’t miss the captivating picture below of Rwandan boys wearing soccer jerseys donated by Beach Junior Athletics.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at RCE!

Inside BDC Rwanda

A student in the BDC's entrepreneurship training programMuch has happened in the first half of our 16-week entrepreneurship training program at the Business Development Center Rwanda. Our students are progressing rapidly with their business ideas: during the first half of the course, they generated and assessed the feasibility of many creative, ambitious business ideas; weeks eight and nine focused on refining these ideas. Our visiting executives helped tremendously in this task.

Grameen, Adidas to make low-cost shoes

2010 年 11 月 25 日

Grameen Group and German sports apparel maker Adidas are planning for a joint venture to make low-cost shoes in Bangladesh for the poor.

If the deal gets through, it will be a major footprint in Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus’ social business.

As the first step, the two sides have signed a memorandum of understanding and are working together on how to bring the products into market tentatively by year-end, said officials of Yunus Centre, the hub of the Nobel laureate’s social business activities.

Grameen and Adidas are working on the price issue, they said.

Dairy giant Groupe Danone and water company Veolia — both from France — have already launched separate joint social business ventures with Grameen to serve the poor with nutrition and safe-drinking water.

Germany’s BASF SE and Intel of USA have also entered joint venture social businesses with Grameen to produce chemically-treated mosquito-nets and provide information and communication technology for the poor.

Grameen has also tied up with Germany’s top chain store Otto to set up a garment factory.

Grameen-Adidas will be the latest in Yunus’s social business efforts.

At a meeting at Yunus Centre last week, Yunus said: “The shoes will be cheap and affordable by the poor.”

“It will protect people from diseases.”

Nadina Terrera, assistant programme officer of Yunus Centre, told The Daily Star yesterday: “We are working on the price issue. It will be quite affordable for the poor.”

Prof Yunus in his speech on Prof Hiren Mukerjee Memorial Lecture on December 2009 in Indian parliament said: “The goal of the Grameen-Adidas company is to make sure that no one, child or adult, goes without shoes.”

“This is a health intervention to make sure that people in the rural areas, particularly children, do not have to suffer from parasitic diseases that can be transmitted through walking barefoot.”

Dear Houghton,

Thank you! Since we reached out to you last month asking for you to share the Slow Money Principles, you have responded and the total number of signers of the Slow Money Principles have grown more than 5%! In addition, 200 people have supported our call for end of year donations and joined Slow Money as members. This month, Utne Reader named Woody Tasch and Slow Money among their “25 Visionaries Who Are Changing The World.” Slow Money Maine was featured on the evening news for their work supporting local food and farming. Slow Money members in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts have launched their own loan fund. They gave their first loan to an enterprise helping local farmers get their products onto local shelves. To top that all off, investments committed to the small food entrepreneurs who presented at the 2010 Slow Money National Gathering have more than doubled this month, to $4 million.

Over the holidays, with time to reflect, please keep up the momentum and take the opportunity to share what is important to you about Slow Money with family and friends. As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving and the harvest, please take a moment now to forward this message and ask two more friends to sign the Slow Money principles.

One of the most heartening aspects of the launch of Slow Money has been the emergence of the Slow Money Principles. In this day of financial razzmatazz and uncertainty, more than 12,000 of us have taken the time to consider and affirm a new vision of money and the soil.

Now, Slow Money is ready to move from launch to full-scale implementation. Slow Money initiatives are emerging around the country. Money is starting to flow into local food systems, and our momentum is building.

1. In Conversation with Ma Xiaoduo鎮苤嗡: From Migrant Worker to Social Entrepreneur

Speaker掛ヽ樁梅: Ma Xiaoduo, Founder of “United Heart” Home of Hope

In 1982, 16-year-old Ma Xiaoduo left her hometown in Jiangsu Province and started working in Beijing, as one among the “first generation of Chinese migrant workers. 27 years later, she is the manager of an NGO providing service to migrant workers. Working since 1997 for the Migrant Women’s Club, she got a chance to visit an NGO for migrant people in United States in 2001, which inspired her to start an organization on her own. Beyond 3 charity shops selling second hand cloth to Migrant workers, Ma Xiaodou opened a Children’s Center, where women could take their children to attend various activities every day. They also held lectures with different themes such as the “one child policy” and women’s health to the mothers.

2. In Conversation with Zheng Hong痑粹: Brining quality education to the underprivileged

Speaker掛ヽ樁梅: Zheng Hong, Founder and Principal Dandelion School
痑粹躓尪ㄛ彡鼠荎笢悝苺酗

Mrs. Zheng Hong, China’s first woman to earn a doctorate degree in geology, had never thought of becoming a middle school principal, let alone found a school dedicated to the children of migrant workers. However, seeing lack of educational care provided to these children because of legal restrictions, Zheng knew that something had to be done. In 2005, she opened China’s first government-approved migrant middle school, the Dandelion School, with the mission of providing a healthy, happy, and enriching environment for Beijing’s migrant children. The Dandelion School has since provided hundreds of migrant children with a junior school education as well as vocational skills training through the school’s social enterprise initiative, which sells creative gifts handcrafted by the children to bolster the school’s budget. Mrs. Zheng firmly believes that migrant children can not only overcome their hardships, but can use these experiences to become the backbone of the country’s future.

What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Statement of Faith
You can find other “Market with Meaning” but you definitely want to see “Profit with Purpose”.
I personally “Believe in Kingdom Transformation” because I know there is only ONE “Life for Significant”.

SVN and UI

SVN is proud to announce a new pipeline partnership with the Unreasonable Institute, connecting SVN’s network of responsible business leaders and the founders of the sustainable business movement with young social venture entrepreneurs from all over the globe who are just starting their bold ventures.

The Unreasonable Institute is now seeking applications from early-stage ventures for its 2011 Institute. See eligibility requirements here and apply here. The application deadline is December 15.

The Unreasonable Institute is a mentor-intensive acceleration program for early-stage entrepreneurs from around the world tackling social and environmental problems. Each year, the Institute unites 25 entrepreneurs from every corner of the globe to live under the same roof for a summer. These entrepreneurs receive training from 60 world-class mentors, form relationships with 30 investment funds, receive legal advice & design consulting, and pitch to hundreds of investors and partners in two U.S. cities. The goal is to enable these ventures to sustain themselves financially and to measurably improve the lives of at least one million people.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact Teju Ravilochan, Unreasonable Institute’s Co-Founder & VP Partnerships & Communication. Call Teju at 303-589-2144, Skype at tejuravi, email at teju@unreasonableinstitute.org.

The 2010 Unreasonable Institute was a great success. 22 entrepreneurs launched ventures in 15 countries. The Fellows included a Nigerian Ashoka Fellow broadcasting market and agricultural information to over 250,000 farmers, a Venezuelan scientist developing a handheld DNA diagnostic device capable of detecting infectious diseases for a few dollars per test, and an Echoing Green Fellow converting agricultural waste into fertile topsoil and clean-burning fuel through a carbon negative process.
