READatCGIClinton Announces READ Global Commitment to Women’s Empowerment

At the recent Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, President Clinton announced that READ Global, founded by SVN member Toni Neubauer and directed by SVN member Tina Sciabica, has committed to create educational and economic opportunities for women and girls in rural communities in Bhutan, India and Nepal. READ Global will build 20 women’s centers within new READ Community Library and Resource Centers by 2014, which will improve the lives of 16,000 women. Click here to read the press release.

The first annual Innovation Leadership in Sustainable Tourism Awards from The International Ecotourism Society were recently announced and the finalists include Playa Viva, whose Principal is SVN member David Leventhal. The awards recognize organizations whose innovative actions effectively promote sustainable tourism and bring tangible benefits to communities and conservation. Playa Viva’s project Sal Viva,“the Salt of Life,” was specifically recognized because it works with local peasant farmers to sustainably harvest mineral-rich salt in an area where salt was collected for the Aztec Kings.
