What is Social Entrepreneurship?

You can find other “Market with Meaning” but you definitely want to see “Profit with Purpose”.

  Social Entrepreneur Spotlight

Brij Kothari, PlanetRead (Indian Social Entrepreneur of the Year, 2009, Schwab Foundation)

300 million Indians are classified as “literate”, but cannot read a Class 2 textbook, let alone a newspaper. Brij Kothari, a professor at the IIM Ahmedabad, came across a very simple idea: Inserting subtitles on popular TV programs in the ‘same’ language as the audio’s, called “Same Language Subtitling”. The semi-literate might not read much, but they do watch TV. By inserting SLS on popular Bollywood song programs, reading becomes an inescapable by-product of entertainment and it works: Research has shown that regular exposure to SLS increases the percentage of children who become good readers after 5 years of primary schooling, from 25% to 56%.   Watch interview

  Quote of the Week

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”  – Michael Jordan
