What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Statement of Faith
You can find other “Market with Meaning” but you definitely want to see “Profit with Purpose”.
I personally “Believe in Kingdom Transformation” because I know there is only ONE “Life for Significant”.

photo competitionA picture says a thousand words, so they say. With that in mind, we’re launching a brand new competition to capture a unique snapshot of the social enterprise sector.
  • What we’re looking for: We need high quality photographs of social entrepreneurs in action. It can be individuals you’ve helped, people at work – as with this cracker from Barefoot Power – or even something a little artistic. As long as it catches our eye and encapsulates the work you do, we want to see it.
  • What you’ll get: We’ll place all entries onto an online gallery dedicated to social enterprise, with the best adorning our walls here at ClearlySo Towers. The winner will receive a free ticket to our Social Business Conference.
  • When we need it: The competition will run throughout August and September. Send entries digitally as jpegs, ideally in a resolution high enough to be printed in A2 format. If that’s not possible then just go for the largest setting your digital camera will allow.
The deadline for entries is 17th September. For more information, or to submit your photographs, contact me now.

Best of the Blogs
Leah WarshawskiThis week from the blog…
  • Is it ethical for microfinance firms to make large profits?
  • Rodney Schwartz is pleasantly surprised by a meeting with civil society minister Nick Hurd.
  • Changing Africa’s narrative – we meet an emerging social entrepreneur helping young Rwandan film makers find their voice.

Case study: Marketing magic
Social media marketing is a difficult challenge for all businesses. The opportunities seem vast, but making it work for your business can be a struggle. However, one social entrepreneur seems to have found a simple and effective tactic: be nice to people and they will be nice back.

When Jane Mason of Virtuous Bread came up with the idea of a bake off to highlight the value of the country’s independent millers, she got a little more than she bargained for.

Before long, the BBC were heading her way to chronicle the momentous event, while all 30 members of the Millers Guild were breaking down her door to get involved. The result – fantastic nation-wide coverage both for herself and her suppliers. Find out more about Jane and her company here.

Social enterprise of the week
With the jobs market still looking perilously weak, disabled people are increasingly finding themselves excluded from full time employment. Operating ten businesses in 54 different locations, Remploy provides employment services for people with disabilities and health conditions.

Working out of 27 recruitment offices in the UK, it prepares jobseekers for the workplace arming them with skills that will prove valuable for future employers.

For more information about how they work, visit their profile now.

Social Business Conference
The Social Business Conference is moving along nicely. We have a number of new speakers confirmed who will offer all sorts of advice and information to help social entrepreneurs drive their companies forward.

Among the speakers appearing this year will be Dai Powell of the HCT Group, who will provide information and advice on raising capital. Barry Coleman of Riders for Health will deliver the keynote lunchtime address, while Anthony Ross of Bridges Ventures will be taking part in the social surgery.

The Social Business Conference takes place on 13th October at LSO St Luke’s on London’s Old street. Other speakers will be added soon, so watch this space.
