APRIL 2010

IN THIS MONTH’S NEWSLETTER:

Greetings friends,

Welcome to the new-look HeroRATs e-newsletter! We hope you’ll enjoy it, and don’t forget to save us to your list of email contacts for future mailings.

The month of April kicked off to a great start with International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action and World Rat Day, both taking place simultaneously on Sunday 4 April.

Here’s all the latest news in communications from HeroRATs Headquarters…

A brand new HeroRAT website

The HeroRATs team has been busy launching our brand new website! Check it out at www.herorat.org.

Learn all about how we got started, and why we chose to work with rats. Find out more about the work we do, and meet the team of heroes and humans who make everything happen on the ground. Take a look at the HeroRATs in action, or check out our blog for all the latest news.

If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact us at herorats@herorat.org. We welcome your suggestions!

Coming soon: The new membership section of the website will be up and running shortly! For those of you who have adopted a HeroRAT, you’ll receive login details so you can sign in and check on your chosen rat’s progress, as well as see pics of your rat at work.

HeroRATs & Bart Weetjens feature in The Economist

This month, The Economist featured a special on the HeroRATs – a montage of images of our heroes in action. The video is part of a series The Economist is producing each month using still images and a commentary soundtrack; April’s edition included APOPO’s HeroRATs. Bart Weetjens tells the story of our history and our work over the beautiful images and graphics.

We are grateful to The Economist for sharing our work with their readership and hope it serves to inform people of where we came from, what we’ve accomplished so far, and where we hope to go.

APOPO article on landmine detection published in latest edition of UNICRI’s Freedom From Fear Magazine

APOPO was published in the latest edition of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute’s (UNICRI) quarterly magazine, Freedom from Fear. This edition was focused on the environment and is available on UNICRI’s website. It is also distributed electronically to thousands of people.

APOPO’s article is focused on training rats for landmine detection. “Although most people view rats as ‘bad animals’ that carry diseases and destroy property, APOPO calls its animals ‘HeroRATs’ for the valuable humanitarian service they perform.”

To see the full article, see page 40 of the March 2010 edition

BBC special: thanks for watching, blogging & tweeting!

Last month’s BBC special about APOPO, Alvin’s Guide to Good Business, helped to raise awareness about the HeroRATs’ important work in landmine detection and tuberculosis screening.

250,000 people viewed the BBC online article about us, and hundreds more blogged or tweeted about APOPO and the HeroRATs!

We wanted to send a massive thank you to everyone who watched the special, shared the link, helped by spreading the word to friends or colleagues, made a donation to the cause, or adopted a HeroRAT. Your contribution ensures our HeroRATs can continue to help sniffing out solutions to global problems! Thank you.

If you missed out on the special, or know someone who might be interested, you can still view it here.

Current and Upcoming Events – Skoll World Forum, World Economic Forum on Africa, Young Global Leaders Summit

APOPO founder Bart Weetjens and CEO Christophe Cox headed to Oxford, UK, to represent the HeroRATs at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship from 14 – 16 April. This year’s forum was all about ‘catalysing collaboration for large scale change’. Look out for an update on their participation in next month’s e-newsletter!

Also coming up soon (5 – 7 May) is the 20th World Economic Forum on Africa, being held for the first time in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Forum’s Young Global Leaders Summit will take place simultaneously, bringing together 200 exceptional young leaders from all corners of the globe, committed to shaping the global future. APOPO will be present for both gatherings and looks forward to sharing a bit of Tanzania with the participants. More on both events next month!

Spotlight On Regions: Sub-Saharan Africa

Our programs in Africa are opening access to information and creating opportunities for poor entrepreneurs in a number of countries. With a new regional CEO, we are poised to broaden our footprint on the continent, expanding our reach to the poorest people living in the most remote areas. Our initiatives like AppLab and Mobile Financial Services are leveraging technology to arm the poor with much-needed knowledge and make microfinance more efficient. We have implemented Progress out of Poverty Indexes™ for seven countries and launched a two-year initiative designed to help African MFIs better target poor clients and gauge the impact of our work.

Happy Mothers’ Day: Women are the Best Poverty-Fighters

CharityWhen Charity’s husband forced her and their seven daughters to leave their home, Charity took their fate into her own hands. She took out a $64 loan with Yehu, our microfinance partner in Kenya, to open a stall selling coconuts. Since then, Charity has diversified the products she sells and earns enough money to fund her daughters’ educations. This Mothers’ Day, we honor mothers like Charity who use microfinance to pave the way to financial self-sufficiency for their families.

Learn more about the Pioneer Fund that helps us reach more women like Charity who live in remote, rural areas.

Des Moines Teenagers Organize Concert to Raise Money for Microfinance

Student Concert FundraiserAfter learning about the “cool, novel concept” of microfinance, Minh Tan Le, Sarah Mowitz, and Kaavya Parca held a concert in February, raising over $800 for Grameen Foundation. They began organizing the event in August 2009 with help from friends and family. “Sarah’s mom woke up at 6:00 a.m. one morning to print posters for us,” Kaayva said. Those posters, along with good grassroots promotion helped spread the word about our work and how we’re helping to change lives. “Obviously no contribution can be too small,” Kaavya said. “But don’t be afraid to think big when you’re planning a fundraiser.”

International Day of Families: Celebrating Our Impact on Millions of Poor

Mother and DaughterAccording to the Microcredit Summit Campaign, more than 106 million of the world’s poorest families received microloans in 2007. Since 1997, Grameen Foundation’s programs and resources have helped more than 45 million poor people, mostly women, improve their lives. In honor of International Day of Families on May 15, we thank you for supporting our efforts to empower these families in their journeys toward financial self-sufficiency.

This year’s holiday examines how remittances have affected the poverty level worldwide. Learn how our partner Fonkoze worked to make these funds available to victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.

Software Teams Hone Skills to Improve Technology that Helps Serve the Poor

Mifos BootcampHow can Grameen Foundation help lift people out of poverty? Software developer Adam Monsen says one way is to work more cohesively to provide local organizations with dynamic and efficient technology. In March, Adam participated in a boot camp/action camp with our Technology for Microfinance (T4MF) team in Seattle, WA. The boot camp immersed the team in training specifically designed to help groups work more effectively. During the action camp, they used this training to enhance Mifos, our versatile management information system that our local partners use to better serve the poor on a larger scale.

Social Ventures Australia
April 2010 Newsletter
Social Ventures Australia (SVA) invests in social change by helping increase the impact and build the sustainability of social sector participants.
Our investments are focused on high potential organisations that are fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.

We provide funding and strategic support to carefully selected non-profit partners, as well as offering consulting services to the social sector more broadly, including philanthropists who are endeavouring to be more strategic in their approach to giving.

Our investments have a bias to education and employment, as we believe these to be critical areas of focus if all Australians are to have the opportunity to realise their full potential.

As a non-profit organisation at the forefront of sector development and innovation, SVA works in collaboration with sector partners, as well as government, business, and some of Australia’s leading philanthropists.
The light that lit a thousand candles
In this ‘Heart of the Matter’ article, former Youth Liaison Officer with Echuca police, Allan Pankhurst, tells the story of the impact that SVA venture partner, the Beacon Foundation, has had on this small rural community on the NSW and Victorian border.

Following the introduction of the Beacon program at local high schools in 2002, Allan identified a reduction in the crime rate amongst young people, as well as an overall turnaround effect on youth problems in the region.

Read his account of the journey experienced by the community here.
    Investing in Impact
As part of SVA’s commitment to encourage increased transparency and improved accountability in the social sector, SVA has joined forces with the Centre for Social Impact (CSI) and PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation to increase awareness of Social Return on Investment (SROI) in Australia.

This new partnership aims to develop a greater understanding of best practice in impact measurement, improve decision making of philanthropic foundations and individuals, encourage transparency amongst non-profit organisations and social enterprises in reporting their impact and develop an Australian SROI network. In addition to providing training to practitioners and consultants in SROI, it will link emerging SROI practice in Australia into international best practice.

Find out more or sign up for regular updates from the partnership.

  Supporting the Social Enterprise Sector
SVA continues to support and invest in sustainable social enterprises with the selection process for identifying suitable social enterprises to support through a number of different projects well under way.

‘Supporting Social Enterprises Project’ funded by the Australian Government’s Jobs Fund initiative is focused on supporting and investing in social enterprises that are creating meaningful employment opportunities for those disadvantaged in the labour market in three local areas – Logan and Ipswich in Queensland, and the western suburbs of Sydney.

SVA is also working on the implementation of two projects in Queensland with the support of the Queensland Government. The ‘Youth Enterprises Partnership Project’ will fund the establishment of two social enterprises in Brisbane and Townsville that specifically target young people aged between 15 and 18 who have either recently entered the youth justice system and are at risk of reoffending or are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless. Meanwhile, the ‘Queensland Inclusive Social Enterprises Project’ will support the development of social enterprises that are focused on employing people who have been long-term unemployed due to mental health issues.

The enterprises SVA will work with will receive important support, such as mentoring and networking opportunities, as well as investment. This wrap round support is vital to help these enterprises progress to the next stage in their development.  Read more about how SVA supports social enterprise here.
  A Case History in Giving
Member of the SVA Leadership Council Bob Bryan has had an illustrious commercial career as founder of Queensland Gas Company and PanAust Limited.

Following the sale of his commercial interests, Bob has turned his energy to philanthropy, establishing the Bryan Foundation as well as the Bryan Research Centre within the University of Queensland.

In this ‘Heart of the Matter’ article, Bob reflects on the experiences associated with taking a structured approach to gifting through the establishment of a Private Ancillary Fund (PAF). Read more.

SEC charter logo

Support for Social Enterprise Charter continues to grow

One week before the election, the Social Enterprise Charter now has 105 signatures from MPs and PPCs across the political spectrum. Party leaders David Cameron (Conservative), Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrat) and Caroline Lucas (Green) have each signed the charter, but with 31 signatories, it is the Liberal Democrats that have the largest presence, followed by Greens at 30, Labour at 25 and Conservatives at 10.

For the full breakdown, please go to www.socialenterprise.org.uk/pages/campaigns.html

The Charter is part of the Coalition’s 2010 election campaign which includes the manifesto “No More Business as Usual”, released on February 16th.

Peter Holbrook, chief executive of the Social Enterprise Coalition said:

“Social enterprises have shown themselves to be a critical point of debate around this election. As accountable, transparent and independent businesses with social and environmental aims, they can make a real difference in the UK’s economy and society. Having cross-party support for social enterprise is crucial, and we are really pleased to have had such a significant response to our Charter.”

Peter Holbrook blogs from San Francisco

Coalition CEO Peter Holbrook is currently in San Francisco attending the Social Enterprise World Forum 2010. The event will bring together over 600 entrepreneurs from across the world to learn, grow and be inspired.  Peter will be speaking as part of a session debating the role of government in supporting and growing the social enterprise movement.

Peter has just posted his first blog from the event which you can read at  http://peterholbrook.wordpress.com/

For more information on the event read the news story at Social Enterprise magazine.

SEC research into alternative education

The Coalition will be publishing a report this summer on social enterprises delivering alternative education to young people. As part of this report, we would like to feature case studies of social enterprises around the UK using a variety of different models to deliver alternative education.

If you run or know of a social enterprise working in this field which may wish to be involved in the project, we’d love to hear from you!

Please get in touch with Olof at olof.jonsdottir@socialenterprise.org.uk for more details.

Opinions needed on proposed increase in National Insurance

In light of the ongoing discussions among mainstream business leaders regarding the Labour Party’s proposed increase in National Insurance the Coalition is interested in gauging what leading social enterprises position on the matter was.

We would therefore be grateful if you could complete this very short survey to gauge your opinion. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/national_insurance

New Children and Young People’s grant

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has announced a flexible grant to improve integrated services for children and young people.

A new children and young people’s grant will be trialed from April 2011, which will take a step towards further integration in services for children and young people and should support a shift to more early intervention and prevention.

The DCSF says that it will work to identify a significant number of pathfinders to try out the grant and will look for a mix of different areas.  The grant will be protected so that money intended for children and young people’s services can only be used for this purpose.

Find out more at the DCSF website.

News from the Tripbod Network

To start off with, a true story…

Mr and Mrs B had been to Morocco, using the information provided by Tripbod Akim in Marrakech. When they heard about the chaos on flights due the the volcanic eruption, they took the next flight back to Paris, which was as close as they could get to London. They arrived at 9pm into Paris with no idea how to make the last leg of the journey back to England.  But luckily, before they left Marrakech, they had contacted our Tripbod in Paris, Laure and asked where they could stay and what would be the next local train to Calais where they could get a ferry crossing. Laure provided them with details of a decent hotel with available rooms in between the airport and the train station ready for when they landed. 24 hours after leaving Marrakech they were at home again, having had an adventurous and relatively easy trip home.

The volcanic eruption left many people stranded and in chaos. This story shows the value of having a local connection when you travel. There are still many people stranded out there and if you know anyone, please forward them this email with the discount code below.

We are now offering a special act of God discount for those stuck out there. Just use the discount code “Act of God” when you are at the basket screen to receive 20% off (until end of April).
